Holy Spirit Series
The Holy Spirit must play a big role in a Christian’s life; bigger than your spouse, boss, teacher or friend’s role. Why? Because the Holy Spirit is the one person you can’t live without! When understood appropriately, Christians will come to see that the Holy Spirit is “good”. The Greek word for good is sympherei. Sympherei means “to be better off” or “to be to someone’s advantage”. We’re going to focus on how the Holy Spirit can be an advantage to the Christian by looking at three ways He is always working for us.
The Holy Spirit convicts of sin (1 Thessalonians 1:5). Conviction means to convince the world of the true state of things in order to move the world from unbelief and sin to Jesus as Savior. The biggest sin that the Holy Spirit convicts’ people of is the sin of refusing to believe in Jesus. This is because the one thing that God requires for salvation is belief in Him. This is one of the primary jobs of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit convinces us that our lack of faith is a problem and that the solution is belief in God (2 Chronicles 20:20).
The Holy Spirit then works to make us aware of righteousness. Take the Apostle Peter for example. He became very aware of God’s righteousness by stating “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord. (Luke 5:8).” The Holy Spirit shows us of our unrighteousness because He is trying to teach us that our salvation is not about our “goodness” or our ability to say we have not done anything bad. The Holy Spirit directs us to Christ where true righteousness can be found.
The Holy Spirit also works to tell us that judgement is coming. Nothing is hidden from God. He sees it all and there will be judgement. The Holy Spirit warns people of this impending judgement. 2 Peter 2:4-10 gives us a warning of the judgement ahead. This warning should compel us to literally run to the cross. For those who have not put their faith in Jesus will not receive a favorable judgment. Those who have, will receive the mercy of a loving father.
