Live Out Your Purpose
Hebrews 12:1-3 NIV 1 “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.”
Everyone has a purpose for their life! Your purpose may not always involve the plans that you have in your mind though. God wants you to see His plans and purpose for your life, not what you think your purpose is. That is why He wants us to “run” the race of faith. The race that we must run is not a short sprint, but rather a marathon – or longer! The word run literally means to progress, to move forward despite struggles. To run the race requires us to be active in our faith for us to live out the purpose God has designed for us.
If you are ever in doubt or need encouragement about the purposes and plans in your life, you need look no further than your Bible. The people of the Bible were not perfect, but they were faithful to the purpose God had for their life. It created a heritage that remains available to this day. It may have taken time, money, resources, energy, more than they (or we) could give, but the people of the Bible lived out the purpose God had for them. If you are in doubt of your purpose, you always have a resource available to you. Open your Bible, go back to the word of God and see how He has sent the Saints to inspire you!
We also learn through this passage that sin complicates life. Read that again, SIN… COMPLICATES… LIFE! Sin has a way of controlling you. You were not meant to be controlled by sin; you were meant to cast off your sin. Jesus died to free us from sin. He didn’t die so that we could play with or dabble in sin. If it is sin, or you think it could be sin, you MUST get rid of it. It is not just things that we consider “big” sins like idolatry or adultery, it could be a bad attitude, a bad habit or a relationship that is keeping you from running the race that God has designed for you. Sin is sin and it must end. Now! Think about this, if Jesus is going to be your champion will you let him be your champion? Will you let him, not your sinful flesh, that decides what is needed to run the race? Follow Paul’s example and do not play around with sin (1 Cor 9:26). Run towards God’s purpose for your life. Run to win the race.
So how do you run the race that God has for your life? You focus on the source of life who enables you to live out that purpose- Jesus. The Devil is going to try to distract you from your purpose. This is one of his biggest tools. Yes, he can cause calamity and destruction, but what the Devil really likes to do is take your eye from God. He wants you to lose the race. That is why you need to focus on God. You need to be in His word and praying without ceasing. Jesus came to show you the way; trust Him to show you how to fulfill His purposes. Trusting in Jesus releases His power in your life. It is not about where you have been, but whom you’re looking towards. God is looking for those who will stay focused on Him so His power can be unleashed in your life!
Live out your purpose for God. Run the race He has for you. You come from a godly heritage and faithful witnesses to God’s purpose. Cast off the sin in your life. No longer be bound to the sin that so easily entangles you. Focus on the true source of life, for that is who truly enables you to live out your purpose. He is our Champion! Trust in His purpose for your life!
